Investigative Image
A senior Russian army officer has been fatally wounded following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The incident happened on Monday morning when an bomb placed beneath a vehicle exploded, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.
Authorities stated that one line of inquiry points to the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has remained silent.
Scene of the Blast
Teams have been dispatched to the location, which is reportedly in a southern district of the capital.
Media coverage suggest the explosion took place in a car park close to a residential building.
History of Targeted Attacks
Since the onset of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military officials have been attacked within Moscow.
This new event comes after other serious incidents, for instance:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a device concealed on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a source from Ukraine previously connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are rarely officially confirmed as a matter of policy.
Hostilities has increasingly seen covert operations extending into the streets of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death continues to be underway.
