Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster last day of competition.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight feet to seal the win, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win against the same opponent.
Final Round Drama
The champion started the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last hole.
Play-Off Climax
That led to a play-off at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.

It is amazing to be stood here.”
Other Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to make up, finishing a stroke behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was his best-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent last round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
