Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on unneeded offerings can be seen as somewhat rude – unless it's done the right way.

A Charitable Sale

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 gifts given to her by international figures on official trips. The diverse haul could include gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They will be put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Rome-based art dealer. A date is yet to be set, but the goal is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the revenue benefiting various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

The presents are currently stored in a repository on the upper level of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away indefinitely.

The full gift list has not yet been officially released, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was presented in parliament. The query raised whether a legal value limit was being followed. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.

A Global Array of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
  • A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the strangest gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, mainly from her allies, with garnering support from global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.

This charitable initiative highlights a novel approach to manage the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
