This award-nominated actress Diane Ladd has died at the age of 89.
The actor, with credits included Chinatown, died at her home at her Ojai, California home. This announcement was announced via an announcement by her child, award-winning actress Laura Dern, her daughter.
Laura Dern, who performed alongside her mother in various films such as Rambling Rose, described her as “my incredible hero plus my profound gift as a mother”, noting that she was at her bedside as she died.
“She was an exceptional mother, daughter, grandmother, performer, creative and empathetic spirit that felt like a dream come true,” she stated. “We were fortunate to know her. Her spirit soars with angels.”
Early Career and Rise to Fame
Ladd’s early career featured minor parts in television programs including Perry Mason while that decade featured her performing with Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.
In the same year, 1974, she performed alongside Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese praised dramatic comedy Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting landed Ladd her first Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.
1980s and Beyond
During the eighties, she was seen in the thriller the movie Black Widow and comedy sequel National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and appeared on the show Alice, a comedy program inspired by Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the following decade, she earned an additional supporting actress nomination for her role in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart, a cult classic in which she portrayed the mom of her real-life daughter Dern’s character. A year later she obtained an additional nod for her acting in Rambling Rose which also starred her daughter.
“This movie that the late Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she flew me and Laura to England for a premiere and a celebration dedicated to us,” Ladd recalled about the film Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, grasping our hands, with tears, seeing us act.”
The 1990s also saw roles in the comedy Cemetery Club reuniting her with Ellen Burstyn, Primary Colors, a satirical film, featuring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne the movie Citizen Ruth where she acted as Dern’s mother another time. Those years also brought her nominations for Emmy Awards for roles on Dr Quinn, the show Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.
Partnerships with Her Daughter
She persisted in performing with her daughter in dramatic comedies Daddy and Them, Lynch’s the movie Inland Empire and White’s dark comedy series the program Enlightened. She was also seen with Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins in that movie and Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.
Her later TV roles included Ray Donovan, a drama and Young Sheldon.
Writing and Directing
Ladd also wrote and oversaw the comedy Mrs Munck which starred Diane Ladd and previous spouse Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a talented star,” she mentioned. “I’m privileged to have directed him in a movie. Indeed, I’m the only woman in history who directed her former husband. I often joke: ‘I advise females, if you seek payback, direct your ex-husband.’ Though I’m just teasing.”
Family Ties
Ladd was also the third cousin of Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a major inspiration on my life”.
During 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a pulmonary condition and told she only had half a year left yet she recovered completely once her daughter transferred her to a different hospital.
“Should you harness your suffering and avoid letting it accumulate like an injury, rather utilize it to explore, to clarify the journey for yourself and others, then you are triumphing,” Ladd remarked.
