Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's remarks directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making hard hits on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.

The Cause of the Latest Exchange

Wilson's response came after Payton made remarks after Denver's historic 33-32 win over the Giants. The coach remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.

Background of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • Wilson joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million extension.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his debut year before the team hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
  • Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
