Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Claim First Wins After Player Arrests
Miami scored eighty-six first-half points against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a decisive 146-114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first basketball match after guard Terry Rozier was detained over alleged unlawful gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also arrested in connection with a sweeping FBI investigation into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the claims.
However, the Heat were focused as they put up eighty-six first-half scores to be ahead of Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year existence.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four points and afterwards stated Terry had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is very dear to all of us. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through this."
The Trail Blazers also secured their initial match since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Chauncey's absence and leading the team to a convincing 139-119 win against the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and his coaching style," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner further said an NBA investigation into the player's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated that situation and were open regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an charge.
"Moreover 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in justice to Rozier.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
