The Mystery Within the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their mission for freedom in episode 6 has them relive a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—an event that could contain the secret to his downfall once and for all.
Heads Up: The following contains major spoilers for the concluding episodes.
The Discovery in the Tunnel
After locating Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a viewing device taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies not within the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.
They watch a Henry as a boy come across an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the trauma went deeper than a simple act of survival.
Like many elements in volume 2, the significance of the mine shaft incident is detailed in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a vessel into a dimension later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
The captain's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to give to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Considering what is revealed about Brenner's work, the case would assuredly have samples of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would later pass on to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.
A second theory, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, much like how Will was influenced by the entity in the past.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear of that cave shows how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a showdown between the monster and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to gain strength.
Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the endgame conflict ahead.
