The White Sox Land Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Major Two-Year Deal.
In a notable move for their retooling roster, the American League club have officially added slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a lucrative contract for the power-hitting player.
Contract Details and Incentives
The deal grants a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to compensation of $16 million for the next season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.
Additionally, Murakami's compensation can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for being named the league MVP award.
- $500K for placing second or third in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for placing in the top ten.
- Another $250,000 for being named the Rookie of the Year honor.
The contract includes that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his consent and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the termination of the term. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.
Transfer Payment and Franchise History
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows are also entitled to a supplemental fee of 15% triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the South Siders, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.
Career Highlights
Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 soon, joins a young core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a difficult season, finishing last in the AL Central but showing a significant improvement from the previous campaign.
Having earned league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, eclipsing the all-time record for a NPB hitter formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.
His last year was limited to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Even with fanning 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Initially playing mostly at first base, he has since transitioned to third.
International Pedigree
Murakami's big-game performance were on center stage during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a walk-off two-base hit that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The very next day in the final against the Team USA, he slugged a game-tying homer in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 championship win.
The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be unveiled at a introductory event on Monday.
