Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Fire So Long As England's Star Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.
One snub was enough. Another and it might have appeared vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to know that winning the World Cup will likely need the involvement of Jude Bellingham, although it is equally on the midfielder to fit into the game plans and team pecking order required with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.
The manager seeks Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is about using it constructively. Individual quality counts but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when fame prevails. Nevertheless, a message has been sent.
Bellingham was given food for thought after being left out of the previous squad. He watched England secure their spot at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach mention valuing the squad's spirit and principles. Naturally, Bellingham has responded in champion style, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against Barcelona and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham focused on frightening rivals instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no advantage to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time not playing has shown him that an international career is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is not afraid to drop big names.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel commented. “Jude possesses a competitive streak. It takes a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he reached. We all need to support him and establish a setting which he can [have] his drive in matches and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”
Bellingham took up much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers versus Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, what about another talent? This is a further gifted No 10 who needs support and direction. He has not played for England since spring and has struggled to perform well recently but the boss was impressed by the 25-year-old after his performance in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund recently.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at available. Morgan Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to pick Cole Palmer once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the team, restricting the captain's influence in the process.
It is hard to see Tuchel making the same mistake if it harms the offensive structure. Space exists for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for the City star, who must play through the middle. The coach prefers him close to the striker. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘We want you in the team but no spot exists on your best position, can you play left wing? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “He is to feature in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea regarding him for years. I think it matches his abilities the most.”
He conceded there are occasions when the player has not looked himself in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has this childish joy for the game, then obviously an issue exists, be it the position, the setup, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is additionally accustomed to representing his club in a certain structure, to have a defined role. I think he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions am I to receive the ball? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
Tuchel discussed one star making runs for easy finishes and Foden drilling in strikes from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his good displays for City at defense. Interest is high.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying Foden as a false 9 versus one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives should Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
At the same time, it is additionally a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that one must look back to the latter setting up Kane to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a goal. Tuchel will know that the two stars only passed to each other once during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.
“This is where at some point it falls to the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. There is still a sense of the player being on trial. He may not be assured to start against the upcoming opponents. The manager desires Bellingham onside but he will be observing him carefully. Leave self-importance outside. It will make a powerful England team into an even better one.
